BACKGROUND I have been researching my Rhoades line back since I first started in 1980. I traced back to Winslow Maine 1811 and determined enough connections to tie in 3 brothers of Troy, Gardiner, and West Gardiner. I eventually made the connection going back to Henry Rhodes of Lynn Mass born 1608, with a possible tree going back another 600 years or so. This line ties into Reynolds and other lines going back to the Revolutionary War, Mayflower, and Kings and Queens. I am #139 Roland4 E Rhoades, on paper anyway. Y-DNA testing indicates I do NOT descend from RHOADES, but PEAVEY. I took the paternal Y-dna test from familytreedna.com in 2008 (#131654) and joined the Rhoades Family Project. They were really screwing up, because I had no matches to other Rhoades's. They were matching me to Peavey! I then tested at 23&me for their autosomal test which also indicates which Y branch you are without matches, which was similar. My 3rd cousin (on paper) #125 Bill Rhoades found me and I encouraged him to take the Y test (#383331). We DO both belong in the general R-M269 Y-grouping, but FTDNA says that he does descend from RHOADES, so he also took the additional autosomal test to see if we share any cousin matches. I was hoping that I at least shared ancestry with John B Rhoades' wife Nancy Reynolds, but we have no cousin matches. That indicates that it is the descendants of their son #28 Roland Eaton Rhoades & Grace Flagg who do not descend from RHOADES. Facial comparisons DO corroborate that. I am finding matches in the Peavey Family Project, but have not found any that help yet. My great-grandmother Grace Flagg (born 1894) lived in Pittsfield Maine by Feb 1912 when my grandfather was born. She married Roland Rhoades 29 March 1911 in Brooks, Maine. The 1910 Brooks census showed a George Emery Peavey also born 1894 - the most likely suspect for my great grandfather. March 2017 - I now have most of the Descendants of Jacob Peavey 1805 of Swanville ME compiled for my family tree, pending photographic and dna confirmation. Be happy to share. |

Henry married Edith WITHEE, daughter of Luke WITHEE and Margaret, on 10 Mar 1841 in Norridgewock, Somerset, ME. Jan 1842 in Winslow, Kennebec, ME and died on 4 Sep 1908 in Winslow,
Kennebec, ME. Henry next married Esther Jane GETCHELL, daughter of Reuben GETCHELL and Charlotte PILLSBURY, on 22 Oct 1843 in Winslow, Kennebec, ME. Esther was born in Jul 1819 in Vassalboro, Kennebec, ME and died on 3 Apr 1906 in Winslow, Kennebec, ME. 5. John Bryant RHOADES (Rufus 1) was born on 27 Sep 1819 in Winslow, Kennebec, ME and died on 29 Apr 1869 in Winslow, Kennebec, ME. John married Nancy Bruce REYNOLDS, daughter of Parmenas REYNOLDS and Nancy SIMPSON, on 7 Aug 1843 in Stoughton, Norfolk, MA. Nancy was born on 23 Aug 1824 in Benton, Kennebec, ME and died on 17 Sep 1904 in Pittsfield, Somerset, ME. [SEE REYNOLDS PHOTO below of Nancy's nephew William W Reynolds] John B Rhoades died April 29, 1869, leaving a personal estate worth $1000 and real estate worth $2000. His land is described as about 100 acres bounded on the west by the Sebasticook River, south by land of John B Stratton, north by Chales C Stratton and Charles E Warren, and east by L. Bangs. Left 7 minor children in 1869: George, Clara, Frank, Anna, John, Fred, and Roland. John's father Rufus age over 80. John B Stratton, administrator. Estate included 8 casks containing 100 gallons of wine. Bills from Dr Bantelle and Dr Crosby. Silas H Rhoades bought some land for $725. John also had land in Winslow known as the bog lot, 35 acres worth $75. Nancy Rhoades was appointed guardian to Clara E, Frank C, Anna L, John F, Fred L, and Roland E, Feb 28, 1870. John, Fred, and Roland each owned 1/7 of the homestead farm. Nancy sold this 3/7 in 1881 to pay expenses of guardianship. The Winslow VR book is unclear on the death date of John, but the microfilm of the original records, v2 p237 clearly says April 29, 1869. His mother is on the same page as June 1, 1869. Those dates "are also recorded on page 307 of the New Book", but that does not seem to be on the microfilm. I purchased a new stone for him in 2011, since his old marble stone is nearly illegible from acid rain and being broken by vandals. Nancy Rhoades died September 17, 1904 in Pittsfield. She wrote her will July 6, 1903. Heirs mentioned were: Clara E Monk of Pittsfield; Annie L Briggs of Belfast; John F Rhoades of Pittsfield; Roland E Rhoades, residence unknown; Martha E Rhoades, granddaughter; William Rhoades of Winslow, grandson; Melvin Rhoades of Winslow, grandson; Lawrence Rhoades and Harry Rhoades, grandsons, in Kansas City, Missouri. Son Frank C got nothing; son Roland nothing, son John F $25, daughter Anna $25, daughter Clara $50 and personal property, granddaughter Irma $25, grandaughter Martha $25, granddaughter Hazel M nothing. Nancy belonged to the Universalist Church of Pittsfield, as did her daughter Clara Monk, and as did her grandaughter Irma, daughter of Roland. Obituary, Sept 22, 1904 Pittsfield Advertiser - Mrs Nancy Rhoades, aged 80 years, died Saturday night [Sept 17], of paralysis. The funeral service, conducted by Rev L W Coons of the First Universalist Church [of Pittsfield], was held at 7 o'clock Monday evening, at her late residence, the home of her son-in-law, Chas F Monk, Grove Street. The remains were taken to Winslow on the 8:10 train, Tuesday, for interment. FTDNA Y-test says Roland4 Rhoades matches to Peavey, not Rhoades, and I do not match a 3rd cousin descendant of John & Nancy, William Rhoades. Looking for an "oops", I find no Peaveys in 1860 Winslow census; there are some in Waterville who appear to be from Prussia, and some in Clinton. 1870 Waterville has many Peavey/Peavy's. Also found no easy connection for Roland I's wife Grace Flagg. Children from this marriage were: 19 F i. Clarissa Bruce RHOADES was born on 29 Jan 1845 in Winslow, Kennebec, ME and died on 29 Aug 1848 in Winslow, Kennebec, ME. Buried in Parmenas Reynolds lot, Ames Cemetery in Benton. 20 F ii. Phebe Ellen RHOADES was born on 17 Oct 1846 in Winslow, Kennebec, ME and died on 4 Sep 1848 in Winslow, Kennebec, ME. Buried in Parmenas Reynolds lot, Ames Cemetery in Benton. + 21 M iii.
