My great-grandmother, Agnes Elisabeth Pettersson was born
in Marstrand, Goteborg, Sweden and came to the US in 1903 with her
brother Henry, not knowing a word of English. She was sponsored by her
uncle Julius Gross. Her parents were Karl Albert Pettersson & Johanna
Malvina Gross. Her brother Erik also arrived in the Farmingdale Maine
area in 1908, before moving to Chicago. Younger sister Marie went
straight to Chicago in 1922. The family lost contact and I am looking
for descendants of the Chicago branches. |

GROSS GENEALOGY - 6/2019 update |
Some of my GROSS cousins who moved to Maine stayed in
contact with our cousins in Sweden. Here is a family history written by Emily
Gross Bailey's daughter, Elsie Reeck:
A LETTER FROM
AUNT ELSIE It even includes the story of my 1st
cousin 3x removed sitting on King Gustav's lap in 1904.
1800s PHOTOS from Elsie: see below
I have also been fortunate to have cousins from
across the pond, find my website and family histories, and we are
sharing info. |

Borjesson
Family sisters Anna Catrina 1822 & Brita Sofia 1823, who helped raise
and care for the GROSS children of their deceased sister (Emelia). See
Borjesson 2-page family to the right>>. Photo from Elsie Reeck. See
the Letter from Aunt Elsie above, for a nice fairly contemporary
remembrance of these people, from a daughter of those children. |

I assume this may be the Swedish Inn that the Borjesson sisters
above, ran
and housed their nieces and nephews. I wonder if the building
still survives. Looks very homey and a nice place for children to
explore and play. |

OSCAR II,
KING OF SWEDEN & NORWAY 1880
|
Gustaf
V (Oscar Gustaf Adolf 16 June 1858 – 29 October 1950) was
King of Sweden from 1907. He was the eldest son of King
Oscar II of Sweden and
Sophia of Nassau, a half-sister of
Adolphe, Grand Duke of Luxembourg. Reigning from the death of his
father
Oscar II in 1907 until his own death 43 years later, he holds the
record of being the oldest monarch of Sweden and the second-longest
reigning after
Magnus IV (the longest as an adult). He was also the last Swedish
monarch to exercise his royal prerogatives, which largely died with him,
although formally abolished only with the
remaking of the Swedish constitution in 1974. He was the first
Swedish king since the High Middle Ages not to have a
coronation and hence never wore a crown, a tradition continuing to
date. He championed universal suffrage, especially for women, and he
was "gay".
